In the curriculum of life, there are many processes of refining and sharpening before ideas, philosophy, and humans become the best of themselves. Ideas are subjected to their workability in real-life situations. In fact, some philosophies die without leaving the embryo stage before events of life relegate them to nothing to speak of.
So, likewise is the system of education in most of the world. Localising the phenomenon of refining and testing it in the Nigerian education system, well see there are many shades to it. However, today we are dealing with a cogent ingredient that guarantees a golden refining and an excellent shining star. Lets begin with this: Hours are important to success in our system, and the question is “Why?”
The Nigerian education system without repetition of complaints and lots of written papers addressing the inadequacy of very good lecture delivery and teaching to understand and application of knowledge in real-life situations. It is, therefore, inevitable for students to personally go beyond the four walls and allocated time of lecture to do research, gather materials, and aids to make them understand different topics and courses they offer, which will take several hours for students who desire to perform excellently.
Also, the system, obviously, allows lecturers to assess students offering their courses the way, and with which method, they prefer. These give teachers and lecturers the power to do whatever they deem fit, hence, students take hours to acquaint themselves with the styles of every lecturer. Some prefer and want students to, without addition or subtraction, give back all they have given or taught the students in class. Definitely, students will need hours to decipher the styles of each lecturer, because it is important to do as flying high is the goal.
Past question is an important key that opens the doors of academic success. In many institutions in Nigeria, it has been said that there are no new questions, therefore, every question during the refining process which is the examination has been or would have been asked sometime in the past. Therefore, a proper study of previously asked questions would help and often gives a head-on when chasing distinction in Nigeria institution. This also requires several hours, given the fact that there are one thousand and one questions to practise with on every course.
Above all, to my colleagues in the University of Ibadan, where is the SACRED HOURS to distinction?
It is a tradition that every time there is a 2 weeks break that is meant for revision and wrapping up of courses before exams start. The hours of this time are the Sacred hours! We cannot dispute the fact that a lot of other things would have encroached into our time during the 13 weeks meant for lecture and studying. But here is a 2 weeks before exams that can increase our morale to a certain degree that can assure us of distinction in the forthcoming first semester exams.
As the exam draws closer every day, we all, respectively, know when our Sacred Hours fall, therefore, it is in our interest to cut all time-consuming engagements that do not matter to our academic excellence. The 2 weeks will not injure or wound your other endeavours. Make wise use of the sacred hours, invest them with wisdom, and, in the end, you’ll dance joyfully.
Wishing everyone the best in the forthcoming exams.
